Allow us to introduce some specific unique features of SportsMed Update to you. Every summary is compiled using a standardised format. Experts in the field utilise this format for each publication so that you, the reader, can follow the same approach. Specific features of the summaries are:
Online search facility
All existing summaries compiled by SportsMed Update are available through the search facility in the membership section of the website. Just search by entering a keyword, author or date, and download all the information you require.
Single page summary
The original research article content is always summarised on a single page for your convenience. Each week 5 summaries are sent to you directly by e mail (Word format), enabling you to read one summary per day. In a year you will have been able to keep up to date with more than 240 original research articles.
Specific features of the summaries are:
Category
The top right corner of each page has a category section that allows you to rapidly file the summary in a pre-designated file. Subcategories are included for more specific filing.
Practice Point
This is a 1-2 sentence practical finding of the article that you can apply to your clinical practice of Sports Medicine.
Evidence based Rating (EB)
Each summary is interpreted using standardised Evidence Based medicine criteria. A 10-point scoring system has been developed which allows you the reader to attach appropriate scientific “value” to the findings. An article with an EB rating of 9 or greater out of 10 represents a finding that can be applied to clinical practice with confidence. More details about this rating procedure will be provided for full subscribers to this service.
Clinical interest rating (CI)
The clinical interest rating is an assessment of the article for it’s clinical relevance. This is a somewhat subjective criterion, but does provide the reader with an idea of the broader interest in this article.

The research question and the type of study used are identified
Methods
A concise summary of the most important elements in the methods used in the study are provided
Results
The main findings of the study are summarised and presented in a graphic format if possible
Conclusions
The main conclusions of the study are summarised
Methodological consideration
Specific elements in the methodology that was utilised are highlighted, including limitations of the study
Keywords
Keywords are identified so that reference systems can be set up.
