Message of the President

Lausanne, 19 December 2011

Dear Colleagues, dear Friends,

On the occasion of the upcoming New Year, it is with great pleasure that I would like to share with you the goals achieved during the year 2011 thanks to the excellent work done so far by the Executive Committee Members to whom I would like to express my gratitude.

Much has been done, but without a doubt the most important success for FIMS has been  the definitive settlement of its Headquarters at the Maison du Sport Internationale in Lausanne, and the consequent change of the FIMS Statutes according to the Swiss Law during the Extraordinary Council of Delegates held in Salzburg last October. A significant return to the roots in the land where our Federation was founded in 1928, during the Winter Olympic Games held in Saint Moritz. This achievement will surely contribute to strengthening the relationship with the sport, scientific and medical communities and with the existing leading International Bodies.

Important editorial initiatives were carried out, like the publication of the FIMS Sports Medicine Manual – Event Planning and Emergency Care edited by Dr. David McDonagh which enriches the collection of the FIMS educational books; it has been also restored the distribution to all the FIMS Members of “SportsMed Updates” edited by Prof. Martin Schwellnus. In the field of communication it has been created a completely new website and planned a quarterly newsletter “FIMSmail” which will report the latest news from FIMS and will be distributed starting from January 2012.

Also in the field of education many projects are in progress, like the FIMS Collaborating Centres of Excellence ones,  which are going to be finalized with the aim to facilitate regional and national educational and research networks, to promote best practice sport medicine principles for athlete care, and the promotion of active living on an international basis. Educational initiatives as the Team Physician Courses, Emergency and Instructor Courses have been continued to be planned and organized during the most important sports medicine events worldwide.

As you know, the 2012 will be the year of the FIMS World Congress of Sports Medicine and it will take place in Rome. The call for abstracts is now open so as the registrations and the housing bureau for the accommodation.

I am also pleased to inform you that, despite this time of  heightened uncertainty for the global economy, thanks to a successful fund raising campaign carried out at a professional level, we have acquired so far two new sponsors, Creagri Europe and Bosco System Lab. which will support the development of our Federation initiatives.

I look forward to welcoming all of you participants in the Rome Congress, and on behalf of the International Federation of Sports Medicine let me warmly wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

XXXII FIMS World Congress of Sports Medicine 2012 in Rome

The Italian Federation of Sports Medicine (FMSI) will organise in the city of Rome in 2012 the XXXII FIMS World Congress of Sports Medicine.

It is universally known that Rome is a place of great traditions, where sports and culture have gone hand in hand for some 3,000 years. It is said “Rome, caput mundi”, and indeed it is one of the world’s greatest cultural and spiritual centres. It is a modern capital, where past and present, sacred and profane, culture and leisure, harmoniously combine in a unique blend, that to many conveys the flavour of the sacredness, and yet the sweetness of life.

With regard to our Federation, the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine is known to be as one the first Associations of Sports Medicine borne in Europe. Next year it will celebrate its 80th year since its foundation (1929). From many years we are very active in the organisation of International Congresses and for having hosted many sports events, and we will be pleased to have this new opportunity to welcome our colleagues from all around the world in our marvellous city.

All information on the Congress can be found at: fimsroma2012.org

Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Delegates in Salzburg

Announcement from the FIMS President, Prof. Fabio Pigozzi
To All the FIMS Member National Associations

Dear Colleagues,

I have the pleasure to inform you that an  Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Delegates of the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS), will be held on the occasion of the 7th European Sports Medicine Congress organized in Salzburg (AUT) on 26-29 October 2011.

This Extraordinary call, according to the decision taken by the FIMS Council of Delegates in Puerto Rico, is due to the fact that the International Federation of Sports Medicine, starting from 1st April 2011, moved its Headquarters to Lausanne, at “la Maison du Sport International”. This change needs to have the Statutes amended as per the Swiss Law, and approved by the Council of Delegates.

A letter of invitation to the FIMS Member National Associations containing all the relevant details has been already sent out by the Office of the Secretary General, Prof. Micheli together with a preliminary draft of the FIMS Statutes and Bylaws, which will need a final endorsement  as per the Swiss Law by the FIMS Legal Advisor in Switzerland, Maitre François Carrard. The final  version of the document will be presented upon approval by the Executive Committee during the FIMS Council of Delegates in Salzburg.

Letter to the IF Medical Chairs

An important initiative of the Interfederal Commission addressed to the International Federations Medical Commissions.

After having collected information through a pilot study carried out in 13 IFs in 2010, FIMS decided to launch a project run by the FIMS Interfederal Commission chaired by Dr. Katharina Grimm to strengthen the position of sports physicians within the IFs,  providing a platform for sharing experiences and facilitating their daily work by practical advice and information.

Lausanne, 21 March 2011

To the Medical Chairpersons of the ISFs

Dear Colleagues

During recent years, anti-doping matters have become a primary concern of international sports federations (ISFs), often, particularly in financially less strong ISFs, consuming the financial and staff resources for medical issues. As a result, the health of the athlete, prevention and education in sports medicine have been neglected or even sacrified to anti-doping. A FIMS survey among 13 ISFs in spring 2010 showed that the status of medicine is generally low and possibilities to influence the decision making of ISFs is limited.

The FIMS Interfederal Commission would like to help rectifying this drawback and alert to the importance of medicine whenever an ISF intends to act responsibly and anticipatively in the interest of their athletes and their sport.

We want to:

  • strengthen the position of the physician in ISFs and give him a voice;
  • provide a platform for sharing experiences;
  • facilitate his daily work by practical advice and information.

Obviously, in order to achieve this, we need to firstly learn if you are actually interested in such assistance and, secondly, what exactly you would expect in this regard. The latter includes learning about the challenges you face, the concerns you have that require support, be it either by information, education or advocacy, and any services that would help to fulfill your function more efficiently and effectively.

We would therefore ask you to please kindly complete the following questionnaire and send it back to us by email

Thank you kindly for your collaboration!

Yours faithfully

Prof. Fabio Pigozzi,        Dr Katharina Grimm
FIMS President              Chair Interfederal Commission

Message From The President

Dear Colleagues, dear Friends,

I am honoured to have been elected President of the International Federation of Sports Medicine, and I would like to warmly greet all of you - physicians and professionals - belonging to the FIMS Member National Associations from the different continents.

I am proud to be able to serve as President of a great organisation because of what I see as its virtues and values and how important these are to the role of our Federation in the present and future. Three of the values that I would like to focus on are: credibility, integrity and honesty in all the professional, scientific and educational activities promoted by FIMS. These universal qualities provide the foundation on which to build the profession and the mission of the sports physician. It is with these values and virtues that FIMS can reach out, not just to the sports medicine community, but also to the global sports world.

Over the past years the International Federation of Sports Medicine has grown in reliability thanks to its efforts in disseminating the principles of motivation, performance, and the health aspects of all people engaged in sport and physical activity. As we all know, sport includes all forms of human movement aimed to express, maintain or improve physical fitness and performance, as well as mental well-being. Sport is also part of the creation or improvement of social relationships in leisure, competition, the enhancement of health maintenance, and in the prevention and treatment of different diseases.

In this context, our work also has to address the protection of the athletes' health, so that they may safely compete in sporting events, and to fight against doping in sport.

The International Federation of Sports Medicine intends to assume a greater role in strengthening the relationship within the sports, scientific and medical communities, thanks to our strong liaison with existing leading international bodies whose representatives have been co-opted into positions on our Executive Committee.

My personal good wishes go to the newly elected Executive Members to keep on doing the good work done so far.

Thank you.
