FIMS Executive Committee Meets in Hong Kong and Expands Global Network of Collaborating Centres
On 17 April 2026, the FIMS Executive Committee convened at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), which co hosted the meeting together with Prof. Patrick Yung, FIMS Vice President.
Among the key items discussed were the organization and scientific program of the FIMS World Congress of Sports Medicine, scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, from 24 to 27 November 2026.
In conjunction with the Executive Committee meeting, the Opening Ceremony of the Centre for Exercise Science and Medicine (CESAME) was also held at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). CESAME is Hong Kong's first "Collaborating Centre of Sports Medicine" (CCSM) recognised by the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) (see: https://www.hkbu.edu.hk/en/whats-new/press-release/2026/0417-hkbu-launches-flagship-centre-for-exercise-science-and-medicine.html).
The Executive Committee also discussed and formally approved the CCSM applications, and the following institutions were officially admitted to the FIMS global network of Collaborating Centres:
- Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Sports Medicine, Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan
- Institute for Sport Medicine (ISM), University for Business and Technology (UBT), Pristina, Kosovo
The inclusion of these centres further strengthens the global FIMS network and reinforces international collaboration in research, education, and clinical practice in the field of sports medicine.
In addition, the Executive Committee engaged in in depth discussions on key scientific and educational topics, reaffirming FIMS' strategic commitment to excellence in knowledge development and professional education.
The meeting was attended by Prof. Giuseppe Massazza as Guest of Honour. Following the late and much missed Prof. Ernst Ras, Prof. Massazza is the only Chief Medical Officer to have served at two Olympic Games: the Torino 2006 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
This exceptional distinction reflects not only his outstanding professional competence but also the high level of trust placed in him by the global sports medicine community. On this occasion, Prof. Massazza presented a detailed report on Olympic Medical Services, sharing insights of the highest international relevance.
The next Executive Committee meeting will be held in Santiago, Chile, on 24 September 2026, on the occasion of the FIMS World Congress of Sports Medicine.
