FIMS mail - 2nd edition 2012 (Lausanne, 3 July 2012)

President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to communicate the latest news from FIMS after the Executive Committee meeting held in Shanghai on 26th April 2012.

First of all, we have now completed the final phase concerning the accreditation of the FIMS Collaborating Centres of Sports Medicine, a project planned by the Executive Committee since its election. These centres will function as local multiplicators and ambassadors of FIMS´ vision and mission and help to achieve our joint objectives in all parts of the world. The aim is to facilitate regional and national educational and research networks, to promote best practice sport medicine principles for athlete care, and last but not least the promotion of an active life style by a broader public internationally. You will find more details on this below. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Education Commission for this important achievement.

My activities as FIMS President, besides the representative, political and educational functions, are still largely directed at consolidating and increasing our budget by attracting sponsors to FIMS. Our headquarters at the Maison du Sport in Lausanne, is currently operating based on a provisional interim solution until we will be in a position to install permanent presence there. This remains one of my major objectives.

A further project in progress is the collaboration with the American College of Sports Medicine in order for both sides to benefit maximally and create an optimal base for future joint efforts to advance sports medicine worldwide by providing not only best care for athletes but extending its influence on public health policies.

Again, I would like to invite those of you that still have to register at the FIMS Congress in September. I am very much looking forward to welcoming you all in Rome, the eternal city, where there is so much more to enjoy besides the scientific and clinical discussions with colleagues from all over the world.

Fabio Pigozzi, FIMS President

News from the Education Commission

The FIMS Team Physician Manual, 3rd edition, is close to publication, so this is the best time to contact the Education Commission at the FIMS Office e-mail address: headquarters-ch@fims.org. should your country be willing to host a FIMS Team Physician Course (TPC), and enable your members to be among the first to benefit from this brand new knowledge source. The course is an asset to any sport medicine conference and can occur as a pre-conference course or run parallel to the main scientific programme. The Education Commission will help you plan the course curriculum, offer speaker suggestions and delegate a commission member to attend your course as a speaker and FIMS representative. Still, you have to plan for at least 6 months to organise a successful course. Each registrant receives a FIMS certificate of attendance and a Team Physician Manual.

The newly revised FIMS Instructor Course will be offered for the second time in Rome, Italy, on September 28th for any FIMS members who have previously taken a TPC and wish to be involved in future courses around the world as an official FIMS Instructor. This course will be an 8 hours intensive small group learning, focusing on the skills to be required to plan a course curriculum and mentor interactive memorable speakers. In addition, you will learn key organizational skills, and become familiar with the FIMS TPC resources. Registration will be limited to 15 participants. Course details are available on the Rome 2012 Congress website.

New edition of the FIMS Team Physician Manual

The 3rd edition of the FIMS Team Physician Manual is an updated version of our guide for doctors who deal with sports teams and athletes. In addition to the completely updated version, there are new chapters on important topics such as cardiovascular screening of athletes, and on the special medical issues to be considered in physically challenged athletes.

This 3rd edition of the FIMS Team Physician Manual is edited by a group of leading sports medicine experts, and the chapters are written by specialists in their field, always with the needs of the team physician in mind. The text is the basis of FIMS’ highly-regarded Team Physician Development Course and deserves to found space in the team doctor’s medical bag as his/her trusty tape and strapping.
