Division of Exercise Science & Sports Medicine  (ESSM) – University of Cape Town (UCT)

The Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine exists as a centre of excellence for promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and optimal physical performance, through research, innovation, teaching, training, and clinical services. Located at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA), the division works in close collaboration with SSISA’s Sports and Exercise Medicine, Orthopaedic, Biokinetics, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Dietetics Practices and the High Performance Centre, as well as various clinical and non-clinical departments within the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCTESSM prides itself on using a multi-disciplinary approach in its research to acquire an integrated understanding of the effects of physical activity on the body. At any given time, there are at least 60 research projects underway at ESSM. ESSM offers postgraduate training at the Honours, Masters and Doctoral levels in the fields of Exercise Science, Biokinetics, Physiotherapy and Sports and Execise Medicine.

These combined resources make ESSM an ideal environment to facilitate World-class research, teaching and clinical practice in prevention and management of injuries and illness in a physically active population, as well as the promotion of athlete health and wellbeing. These resources also facilitate teaching and research in non-communicable diseases as well as the promotion of athlete health and wellbeing. and the effects of physical activity in society.

Director Dr Jeroen Swart on their vision: "Our goal is to produce world-class research in Sports & Exercise Medicine and disseminate this knowledge; thereby enhancing practical clinical skills and expertise throughout our diverse country, with a special emphasis on providing Sports & Exercise Medicine services to a broader sector of our population. In collaboration with other CCSM’s we aim to contribute to the vision of FIMS by promoting and developing Sports & Exercise Medicine throughout  Africa and the world."

12th EFSMA Congress of Sports Medicine

The 12th EFSMA Congress of Sports Medicine will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from 20th to 23rd April 2022, organized by the Hungarian Society for Sports Medicine. The Hungarian Society for Sports Medicine is highly committed to host the forthcoming flagship event of EFSMA, the 12th EFSMA Congress of Sports Medicine in 2022 in Budapest. The theme of the Conference "Multidisciplinary approach - Innovation for health and performance" creates an excellent opportunity to participate for all Representatives from a broad range of fields related to Sports Medicine and Science. The experts of internal medicine, exercise physiology, cardiology, orthopaedics and traumatology or rehabilitation are invited to share the advances in the area. The Conference will be opened for physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologists and other relevant stakeholders of the sports sector. Budapest, the "Pearl of Danube", serves as the city of around 1,000 international congresses yearly. The vibrant cultural life, historical attractions, thermal baths, good food and wines, friendly people and genuine hospitality had made Budapest the sixth most popular city in Europe.
